The gastronomy of Comporta and Alentejo
The gastronomy of Alentejo is creative and generous. It surprises visitors by its flavours and testifies to the hospitality of its inhabitants.
This was once a region of wheat fields and vast plains, where the herds of pigs roamed freely in the oak forests and olive groves. Bread, pork and olive oil thus became the staples of local cuisine. Aromatic herbs like coriander, parsley, marjoram, pennyroyal and mint are also frequently used.

Here are some specialties that make the gastronomy of Comporta in Portugal famous:
Soup
Like everywhere in Portugal, soup is a must. In the Comporta region, there are delicious soups of cod or tomatoes with «linguiça» (chili pepper sausage).
«Açorda alentejana»
A very simple and typical dish made with olive oil, garlic, a poached egg, bread and coriander.
«Migas»
Migas are a mixture of bread, olive oil and garlic. They accompany, for example, dishes of fried pork or shredded cod.
Shellfish and crustaceans
On the coast, you’ll find excellent fresh grilled fish. There are also other, more original, specialities like gooseneck barnacles or dishes prepared with clams. The inevitable Alentejana-style pork is a good example of this mixture of the land and sea.
A great wine producer
The Alentejo is one of the largest wine producing regions of Portugal. Among the most well-known are the Borda, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Vidigueira, Cuba and Alvito wines.
Alentejo cheeses
The region also offers a large number of cheeses. The most famous are the cheeses of Nisa, Evora and Serpa.
A wine region of tradition
This region is also famous for its wines. Viticulture has indeed been present for a long time, because the fields of cereals have been replaced little by little by vineyards.
The wines here benefit from the ambient heat and different soil characteristics, depending on the area (granitic, limestone, Mediterranean or schistous). This allows to produce wines very different and unique which are among the most renowned of Portugal. They surprise by their excellence, their aromas and their dresses.
In Alentejo, the wine producers are divided into 8 areas of protected designation of origin: Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Reguengos, Vidigueira, Évora, Granja / Amareleja and Moura, and also the Alentejo wine that we found everywhere in Portugal.
The white wines are aromatic, fresh and harmonious, while the reds, with their ruby or garnet color, prove to be more intense, richer and simultaneously sweet and slightly bitter.
