Comporta beaches, the most beautiful places

Comporta in Portugal is renowned for its wild and unspoilt natural landscape, peaceful atmosphere and charming traditional villages. The magnificent beaches that stretch along more than 60 km of coastline are undoubtedly one of its main assets.
The beaches of Comporta are indeed covered with a fine white sand that contrasts with the deep blue of the ocean and the dunes covered with vegetation. For your stay, rent a holiday home in Comporta.

You can go there to take a surfing course, to watch the local fishermen on the shore and the dolphins that sometimes pass by just off the coast, or simply to relax as you wait to enjoy the sunset. In summer on the Comporta beaches, you mustn’t miss the itinerant sellers who will offer you gourmet “bolas de berlim” (traditional doughnuts filled with cream) to help you get your strength back!

Whichever beach you choose, you will not see any buildings or other structures here to spoil the landscape. All you will find is a few wooden beach restaurants, and they match their surroundings perfectly.
The water temperature in Comporta varies between 14° and 20°C, with an annual average of 17°C. These temperatures may seem low, but they are very cool and refreshing on hot summer days.

Working from North to South, here are the most beautiful beaches in the Comporta region and their special features:

Tróia Galé beach & Tróia beach / Praia Tróia Galé & Praia Tróia

The beaches of the Tróia peninsula are particularly recommended for children. These are the only beaches where the waves are shallow, which allows the youngest children to enjoy the delights of swimming. There are plenty of places to eat and buy ice cream or drinks at the marina and nearby.
Tróia Marina is also your starting point for boat trips to observe the birds and dolphins of the Sado Reserve. You will also find various water sports and sailing activities.

Access to the beach
Access to these beaches is very easy, as the Tróia marina has both underground and outdoor car parks. If you are coming from Lisbon, you can take the ferry to arrive directly on the Tróia peninsula.

Soltroia Beach / Praia Soltroia

The sand here is golden, and the ocean is calm because it is slowed down by the sandbanks that you can see from the Arrabida mountain. This beach is one of the safest for young children to swim on.
Its name comes from the private “Soltroia” estate, which is not very busy, and which must be crossed to access it. You will pass a large bar, and an old abandoned beach club, which seems strange, but further on you will find a beautiful and often deserted beach.

Remember to bring your own equipment as you won’t find any sun loungers or parasols here.

Access to the beach
There is a small car park in front of the wooden path leading to the beach, as well as numerous parking places on the estate.

Comporta Beach / Praia da Comporta

Located in the south of the Troia peninsula, Comporta beach is known to be the trendiest around Lisbon. You can understand this enthusiasm when you discover this glorious stretch of white sand, which seems totally wild and is preserved by the dunes that surround it and the fields of rice that are on the other side.
Between the blue of the ocean and the green of the paddy fields, Comporta beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
In summer on the beach of Comporta, you can enjoy sun loungers and parasols to relax on, as well as the Mosquito bar which offers cocktails and soft drinks at sunset.

Restaurants
There are two restaurants on this beach, the Comporta Café and the Ilha do Arroz, as well as a bar that opens during the summer season and offers evening entertainment and DJ sets. In the summer, remember to book your table a few days before you arrive.

Access to the beach
Comporta Beach is located just outside the village of Comporta, on the road that leads along the Troia Peninsula. It has a car park which is often full to overflowing during the summer. Cost: €5.

Carvalhal Beach / Praia do Carvalhal

This beach is located just outside the village of Carvalhal. It attracts both locals and tourists. Praia do Carvalhal is bordered by dunes and fields of rice that are home to many species of insects, birds and flowers. Fully integrated into this ecosystem, Carvalhal beach is extremely pleasant and seems to be impervious to the passage of time.
There are plenty of activities here, such as swimming, fishing, surfing, bodyboarding, walking or jogging.

Restaurants
The beach is served by two family restaurants, O’Dinis which belongs to a fisherman, and the Por do Sol. You can enjoy delicious grilled fish, clams and traditional Portuguese dishes. Children can play in the little huts on the sand below the restaurants.

Facilities
Carvalhal beach is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
Sun loungers and parasols are available for rent throughout the summer. However, due to high demand and limited availability, we advise you to book them in advance. Contact the Por do Sol restaurant to make your reservation.
Showers and toilets are also available on site.

In summer, the beach is monitored by marine police patrols and lifeguards.

Access to the beach
Coming from Grandola, Melides, Troia or Alcacer do Sal, you must join the Route Nationale 261 (N.261) and head towards the village of Carvalhal. Once there, follow the signs for the beach.
There is a secure and shady car park 200 m from the shore. Be careful, it fills up quickly in summer, and you have to park in the street. Parking cost: €5.

Pego Beach / Praia do Pego

Pego beach is splendid and extends over no less than 4 km. It is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe, and its reputation is accentuated by the beach restaurant, the Sal, which the Condé Nast Traveller magazine has voted one of the ten best places in the world.
This expanse of endless beach is incredible with its golden sand, unspoilt vegetation and surrounding pine forest. You will feel like the Robinsons, lost at the end of the world. If you are lucky and watching at the right moment, you can have the pleasure of seeing the Sado dolphins passing by – magical!
Pego beach is ideal for swimming, surfing, bodyboarding and kite flying.

Restaurant
The celebrated “Sal Restaurant” is the only restaurant on Pego beach. It is famous for its grilled fish and refined dishes, for the select clientele and the atmosphere, which is very relaxed.

Beach of Brejos / Praia dos Brejos

Access to the beach at Brejos is not easy. Consequently, it remains rarely visited all year round, which is particularly well worth knowing in summer when tourists invade the neighbouring beaches. Praia dos Brejos is only accessible on foot and by bicycle across the paddy fields that stretch between Comporta and Carvalhal.
The surrounding landscape is, therefore, particularly well conserved. From the beach, you can admire the “Serra da Arrabida” nature reserve, kilometres of beach, with no buildings, bordered by the ocean.
There is no restaurant or bar in Praia dos Brejos, so you should plan for a picnic, refreshments and shade when the temperature rises in the afternoon.

Access to the beach
The easiest way to get there is to go across the fields of rice by bike and get as close as possible to the path leading to the beach. If you go by car, you will have to park next to the Glória café and the Grvásio restaurant and walk through the paddy fields. This is a 40-minute walk, which is very pleasant, but you should avoid the hottest hours of the day.

At the bottom of the dune, you will find a paved concrete path leading to this wonderful deserted beach. Take care: if you are coming back at the end of the day, remember to bring a mosquito repellent spray.

Galé Beach – Fontainhas (Raposa) / Praia da Galé – Fontainhas

Praia da Galé – Fontainhas is very different from the other beaches around Comporta, as it is bordered by fossil-rich red sandstone cliffs and large and magnificently shaped sand dunes.
You can find evidence of life forms dating back nearly five million years in these cliffs. The landscape is very impressive, and its beauty is magnified at sunset when the sun shimmers with the ochre colours of the cliffs.

Access to the beach
To access the beach, you must take a path that starts from the small car park located next to the Galé camping site.

Aberta Nova Beach / Praia da Aberta Nova

Aberta Nova beach is about 3.5 km long, so it is always easy to find a quiet place to settle down and enjoy the magnificent setting. From the top of the dunes, you have a magnificent view of the ocean, the beach and the surrounding local flora.

Beach restaurant
At the top of the dunes, you will find the Bar dos Tigres restaurant, which offers a really beautiful view of the beach. It serves light lunches, snacks and drinks throughout the day. It is a good idea to book ahead in summer.

Sun loungers and parasols are available for rent throughout the summer, but due to limited availability, we advise you to book them in advance.

The beach is usually guarded by lifeguards from mid-June to mid-September.

Access to the beach
Access to the car park is from the Route Nationale, N 263. The secure car park is located 200 m from the shore, and you have to arrive early in the summer to find a place. Then you have to go down a long wooden staircase to access the beach.

Melides Beach / Praia da Melides

Melides Beach is a long stretch of sand that separates the sea and the Melides Lagoon. Between these two bodies of water, Praia da Melides offers a magnificent setting that you never tire of contemplating.
There is a volleyball net on the beach. You can also surf with Dreamsea Surf Camp or take an enjoyable paddle ride on the lagoon with the Surf in Comporta team.
At the end of the day, be sure to stop in Melides. This village, with its white houses, typical of the Alentejo, deserves taking a little time to stroll through its charming alleyways.

Restaurant
On the beach, the family restaurant, Lagoa o Mar, offers snacks and more elaborate dishes in a relaxed atmosphere, still with your feet in the sand!

Ten minutes from Melides city centre, access by road is easy. This beach also has a large car park.
