Comporta is on the Atlantic Coast south of Setúbal, just over an hour from Lisbon. It is therefore quite possible to come and recharge your batteries in this uspoilt paradise for a few days during a stay in the Portuguese capital.
The beautiful beaches and the authentic villages of Herdade da Comporta are particularly pleasant for a break, away from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon and urban life.
To get to Comporta, you must first fly to Lisbon
A 2 1/2 hour flight from Paris, A 2 hour and 40 minute flight from Brussels, A 2 3/4 hour flight from London, A 3-hour flight from Amsterdam, A 3 1/2 hour flight from Berlin, A 6 hour and 50 minute flight from New York. From the capital’s airport, it takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to reach paradise. The drive is beautiful and you can stop off in a few other towns on the way, but we recommend taking the ferry. See how below.
How to get to Comporta from Lisbon?
There are two routes to reach Comporta from the airport.
The first is to go via Vasco da Gama Bridge, Setúbal, Alcácer do Sal and then Comporta. This very pleasant road takes you along the Sado estuary. We recommend you stop in the charming village of Alcácer do Sal, which gracefully stretches along the right bank of the river. A stroll along the wharves and narrow streets and up the stairs that lead to the castle is a charming experience.
Take the road
It is possible to book a transfer from Lisbon to Comporta with Suntransfer, Uber or other transport companies that offer these services from the airport. However, we strongly recommend you rent a vehicle in order to enjoy the various centres of interest of the Comporta region. The region is small and easy to explore. However, transport and taxis are hard to come by in the area, and depending on the season, the few taxis that do exist quickly run out of availability.
Take the ferry for a magical start to your holiday
The second option is to drive to Setúbal and then take the ferry for Tróia with your vehicle. The 25-minute crossing is magnificent. When you smell the pines and the Atlantic breeze from the deck, you will know that your holiday has begun… And if you keep your eyes open and are lucky, you might even see dolphins! From Tróia, it is just a 15-minute drive to reach Comporta to enjoy a glass of white sangria on its huge white sandy beach. We highly recommend starting with the ferry. It’s an excellent way to start your day and a unique moment.
The best seasons to visit Comporta
Comporta is a pleasant destination year round, but certain periods are best for holidays.
The months of July and August are the warmest, with an average temperature of 32 °C. It is the ideal time to enjoy the beaches and swimming. Don’t forget your sunscreen because the UV index is high throughout the day.
The summer is also the most popular period for tourists. You should book your accommodation a long time ahead, ideally in November or December of the previous year.
It is not just the tourists that are plentiful in summer, it is the same for the mosquitoes. They come out when the sun goes down. It is highly recommended to choose accommodation with mosquito screens on the windows, in order to enjoy the cool of the evening without the risk of mosquito bites. Wear long clothing if you eat outside. Insect repellent sprays can also be a good idea. The coldest months are January and February. The average temperature is 16 °C.This is still quite acceptable to visit the region’s lovely fishing villages and even enjoy lunch in the sun on a terrace or the beach.
Nevertheless, you should pack warm clothing because it gets cool in the evenings and at night. It is also important to know that some restaurants and shops are closed during this period and do not open until March or April. Temperatures get warmer in March and April, but these two months can be a little wet. It’s a good idea to bring a raincoat with you. To take advantage of the fine weather, activities and points of interest in Comporta and avoid the peak tourist season, it’s best to come during the “mid-season”. The months of April, May and June or September to October are recommended.
